2000 - Penn State Cancer Institute is chartered

July 2003 - Dr. Thomas P. Loughran Jr. is named the  first director of Penn State Cancer Institute

January 2008 - Specialized 20-bed inpatient unit dedicated to cancer care opens inside the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, taking number of inpatient beds for cancer patients to 32

March 2008 - Cancer Institute first named a Blue Distinction Center for Complex and Rare Cancers

June 2009 - Cancer Institute opens 178,000-square-foot freestanding home on the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center campus

February 2011 - Cancer Institute forms Penn State Melanoma Center, which brings together researchers and clinicians from dermatology, oncology, pharmacology and other areas to identify and evaluate new agents and clinical interventions

December 2012 - Cancer Institute specialists begin seeing patients at the Lance and Ellen Shaner Cancer Pavilion at Mount Nittany Medical Center, as part of a commitment to provide the highest standards of individualized care for oncology and hematology patients in the Centre County region

June 2013 - Cancer Institute helps kicks off the Big Ten Research Consortium, designed to transform cancer research through collaborative oncology trials that leverage the scientific and clinical expertise of the Big Ten universities

October 2013 - Creation of Cancer Care Partnership, a partnership of Mount Nittany Health and Penn State Cancer Institute to provide state-of-the-art, personalized cancer care in the Centre County region

March 2014 - Dr. Raymond Hohl becomes the second director of the Cancer Institute
